Choosing Bridesmaid Dresses: 5 Mistakes

Have you selected your bridesmaids' dresses yet? Your gown will obviously be the most important dress of the day, but it's important that your girls look and feel great, too. This week, our bridal salon in West Palm Beach is here to examine a few mistakes brides commonly make when selecting bridesmaid dresses. By familiarizing yourself with these now, you'll be less likely to fall victim to them as you continue the planning process.

Mistake #1: Giving Your Girls Too Many Options
When it comes to shopping for bridesmaid dresses, your first instinct may be to gather your girls together to ask what type of dress they'd like to wear. However, asking your girls to start with an empty slate will likely result in a myriad of different opinions that may be impossible to build on. Instead, we recommend that you select three options and let your girls pick their favorites from there.

Mistake #2: Not Asking Your Bridesmaids' Opinions
As the bride, you ultimately have the final say on what your bridesmaids wear. As we just discussed, asking your girls' opinions may seem like an impossible way to settle on a solution. However, while you may not be able to let your girls choose exactly what dresses they wear, it's wise to touch base with your bridal party to see what's on their "no fly" lists. This will give you some basic options to eliminate, which will make your search easier.

Mistake #3: Waiting Too Long To Begin The Search
You're probably well aware that you should begin shopping for your wedding dress at least six to eight months in advance, but did you know that you should allocate a comparable amount of time to find your bridesmaid dresses? It takes time to find the perfect dresses, and it's important to allow your girls plenty of time for fittings and any necessary alterations.

Mistake #4: Not Accounting For Different Body Types
If you're like most brides, chances are good that your bridesmaids are all very different women with very different body types. Depending on their physiques, a dress that is gorgeous on one bridesmaid may be less flattering on another one. Your bridesmaids deserve to look and feel great on your big day. Be considerate and look for a dress type that will flatter everyone in your bridal party. If their body types are drastically different, you may want to consider mismatching styles.

Mistake #5: Not Giving The Dresses A Thorough Test Run
When your bridesmaids try on their dresses, it's important to run through all the motions they anticipate making at your wedding. Posing for pictures and standing at the altar is only part of the story - they'll also be running around helping you finish getting everything ready, and dancing (and maybe even jumping up and down) at the reception. Your girls shouldn't have to dance with one hand on their skirts keeping them from riding up all night.
