Caring for Your Wedding Dress - Before, During, and After the Wedding!

Finding your wedding dress is one of the most important steps in wedding planning! Once you find your wedding dress and your big day is getting closer and closer, you may be wondering what you need to do to care for your wedding gown. Today, our bridal salon in South Florida has some tips for caring for your wedding dress before, during, and after your wedding.

Storing Your Wedding Dress

The best place to store your wedding dress is in a cool, dry place. A climate-controlled environment is very important when it comes to protecting your wedding gown. You want to avoid large swings in temperature and high humidity. Both can cause premature aging in lace and other delicate fabrics. Light tends to cause discoloration in fabrics, so be sure to keep your dress in a dimly lit or dark space, avoiding any harsh light. You probably want to avoid hanging it in a closet that is used daily. However, if you store it in the basement, you'll want to be wary of moisture. Consider using a dehumidifier in that area while you're storing your wedding dress. Avoid storing it in the attic, as everything from insects to roof leaks can cause damage to your dress.

Hanging Up Your Bridal Gown

Whether your wedding is weeks away or months away, you'll want to hang your dress up rather than storing it in a box. This will prevent your dress from becoming horribly wrinkled. As soon as you get your dress home, place it on a padded hanger (rather than a plastic one). Make sure to put your dress in some types of bag for protection while hanging and don't store it next to a bunch of other clothes. Give your dress some space to stay aired-out and unwrinkled. If you purchased your dress from a professional wedding dress shop in South Florida, they should provide you with a bust form and an extra long bag to help eliminate the need for extra pressing or steaming.

Transporting Your Wedding Dress

Keep your dress in the bag during transportation. If you're getting married close to home, you can lay your dress across the back seat of the vehicle. Avoid scrunching it up to fit in a small space, as this will cause wrinkles that will be difficult to get out. You don't want to steam your dress unless absolutely needed, and many delicate fabrics require professional care only. You don't want to risk damaging your bridal gown prior to walking down the aisle.

Your Wedding Dress on the Big Day

Use extra caution around your dress on the big day. You and your girls will be getting ready together, and it's important that you all use caution to avoid damaging or staining the dress. As soon as you arrive at the venue, hang the dress up again. be sure that the train is not hanging out where it could get stepped on. Be sure to apply any perfume and hairspray before putting your dress on, as these products can stain or damage the fabrics. If you must do any touch-ups after you're dressed, be sure to cover your dress with a towel.

Emergency Bridal Gown Care During the Wedding

From makeup and lipstick to wine and food, there are a variety of different ways to easily stain your dress during your wedding. Use extra care when treating stains during your event. For makeup or lipstick, cover the area with cornstarch or baby powder, ensuring NOT to rub the area. Wait 15 minutes before removing the excess powder. This will mask the stain and preserve the area for cleaning by a professional after your wedding. For wine and beverage stains, do not apply water or other liquids that might dispense the stain. Instead, blot the area dry and then coat with powder as mentioned above for makeup stains.

After Your Wedding

After your wedding is over, it's important to get your wedding dress cleaned and ready for storage if you are planning to keep it.
