Wedding Dress Shopping: The Ultimate Checklist

Let's face it... there's a lot that goes into perfecting your bridal look. There are literally hundreds of wedding dress styles to choose from - not to mention the countless other choices you'll have to make about wedding dress accessories, underpinnings, bridal veils, shoes, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, hairpieces, and other adornments.

In order to keep yourself from feeling totally overwhelmed, you have to have a solid game plan. Bridal Couture of the Palm Beaches is here to help you stay organized and on track with this simple, no-nonsense wedding dress shopping checklist.

Step 1 - Identify Your Budget
Before you begin actively searching for wedding gowns, you need to have a realistic understanding of how much you can afford to spend. If you skip this step, you risk falling in love with a dress that is way out of your price range, which only causes unnecessary stress and heartache.

Step 2 - Organize Your Favorites
Create a binder or Pinterest board with pictures of various gown styles you like. This board can serve as inspiration for when you begin dress hunting in earnest, and it can be a helpful way to communicate your ideas to your dress consultant (and your friends and family as well).

Step 3 - Pick Your Venue
The venue you choose will significantly influence the style of dress you want for your wedding. After all, an extravagant ballgown might look a little out of place at a barefoot beach wedding! Where you think you want to get married may change a few times, so do yourself a favor and lock in your venue before going dress shopping.

Step 4 - Choose Your Wedding Date
The time of year you get married will impact the type of dress you wear. A light, breezy dress will likely be a better fit for a wedding in the heat of summer, for example, whereas a heavier ballgown may be ideal for a winter affair. Your venue and your date will likely go hand-in-hand, so you should be able to cross these two steps off your list at the same time.

Step 5 - Start Shopping Twelve Months In Advance
While you want to make sure these other details are taken care of before you begin actively dress shopping, you still need to give yourself plenty of time to find the perfect dress. You should plan on ordering your dress at least 8-10 months before your big day in order to allow plenty of time for fittings and adjustments.

Step 6 - Finalize Your Undergarments
The dress you choose will impact the type of undergarments you need, as many gowns have built-in corsets, bras, and/or shapewear. It's important to select your undergarments well in advance so that you can wear them to your fittings, as they will impact the way your gown fits.

Step 7 - Choose Your Shoes
Your shoes are another important detail that should be identified several months in advance. The height of the heel you choose (or whether or not you opt for flats) will strongly influence how long you want your gown to be, so it's best to choose your shoes several months in advance. Don't forget to wear them to your dress fittings.

Step 8 - Choose Your Accessories
Last but certainly not least, you'll get to choose the accessories you wish to use to complete your bridal look. Veils, hairpieces, headdresses, belts, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets are all at your disposal. If you want to wear several pieces for your big day, we recommend that you choose accessories that are a bit more understated. If you are drawn to a larger, more eye-catching piece, you may want to showcase it by making it your only accessory.

All About Wedding Veils

As the bride, multiple decisions about your wedding "look" await you. Choosing your dress is only one piece of the puzzle - you will also get to select your shoes, gown accessories, jewelry, the ever-important undergarments, and your veil or headdress.

Some brides choose to adorn their hair with hairpieces or flowers, some are drawn to tiaras, some opt for a simple look without any adornment whatsoever, and other brides choose to go the more traditional route by selecting a wedding veil to match their dress. If you're thinking about wearing a veil for your special day, this blog post is for you. Bridal Couture of the Palm Beaches is here to help you get a better understanding of this classic bridal accessory and help you choose which style will be best for you.

The History Of The Wedding Veil

The wedding veil dates back centuries. It served slightly different purposes in different cultures. The superstitious ancient Romans and Greeks were very fearful of evil spirits, so some say that the bride wore the veil to protect her from these evil spirits. (As a side note, this is also believed to be the reason that bridesmaids wear bright, similarly colored dresses - by dressing in this manner, they were believed to distract the spirits and serve as decoys for the bride.)

The veil also served to shield the bride's face from her husband-to-be. This was specifically used in arranged marriages so as not to risk the groom changing his mind. He didn't have the opportunity to see her face clearly until the marriage was already complete.

The Modern Wedding Veil

Though these may be the reasons why wedding veils were first introduced, it is probably safe to assume that modern brides do not wear veils for either of these reasons. Today, wedding veils are worn as whimsical, stylish accessories brides use to complete their wedding day looks. Modern wedding veils can be made of netting, lace, or any light, semi-sheer fabric. They come in varying lengths and styles.

Common bridal veil lengths include:
  • Birdcage - Small veils that may cover the face down to the chin or fall just below the eyes.
  • Shoulder length - Veils that fall to the bride's shoulders.
  • Elbow length - Veils that fall to the bride's elbows (near the middle of the back).
  • Fingertip length - Veils that fall to approximately where the bride's fingertips would be if she let her arms hang to her sides (at or just below the waist).
  • Ballet length - Veils that fall between the knees and the ankles (also called waltz length).
  • Chapel length - Veils that reach all the way to the floor, but do not have a train (also called sweep length).
  • Cathedral length - Veils that fall to the floor behind the bride and create a long, elegant train.

Wedding Veil Styles

Just as bridal veils come in multiple lengths, brides can select their veils from multiple styles as well. Some brides choose to have their faces covered, and others choose veils that hang down their back. Some brides prefer elaborate, lacy, or ornate veils, and others prefer simpler, more understated pieces.

No matter what style you choose, your veil should complement your gown. We recommend that you choose a veil that is the same color as your dress, and that it does not compete with your dress in any way. Instead, the two should work together to create a bridal look that is truly breathtaking.

4 Steps To Choosing The Perfect Gown Style

Choosing your wedding dress is a big decision. As the bride, all eyes will be on your for the majority of your wedding. The dress you choose should make you feel like the beautiful, confident, special woman that you are. Narrowing your search for the perfect wedding dress may seem overwhelming at first, but our bridal boutique in West Palm Beach is here to make the process easier. Follow these four steps to find your perfect wedding dress in South Florida.

Step 1: Choose Your Silhouette

As the overall shape of your gown, the silhouette is one of the most prominent stylistic aspects and should be selected first. You have several options to choose from. Ballgown, sheath, mermaid, fit-and-flare, and A-line are typically the most popular silhouettes for wedding gowns.

The silhouette you choose may depend slightly on your body type, as certain silhouettes tend to be more flattering on certain figures. It will also depend on the style of wedding you are planning. If you are planning a casual affair, for example, a sheath dress or an A-line gown may be more appropriate than an extravagant ballgown.

Step 2: Choose Your Neckline

After the silhouette, the neckline is often the most striking feature of a wedding gown. It should hug your shoulders, collar bone, and bust in a manner that makes you feel spectacularly beautiful for your special day. Strapless, sweetheart, halter, high neck, off-the-shoulder, scoop neck, and V-neck are popular choices. Some brides may also select a bateau neckline (a high scoop neck that crests the collar bone) or an illusion neckline (a sheer fabric embellished with lace or other accents).

As you decide which neckline you prefer, it is also a good time to consider the sleeve style you would like. The two often go hand-in-hand. One-shoulder gowns, for example, have a very distinctive neckline that accompanies their style. Spend some time thinking about which sleeve style you prefer: sleeveless, spaghetti straps, long or 3/4 sleeves, etc.

Step 3: Choose Your Back Detail

The front of your dress will not be the only side of your dress that is showcased on your special day. From walking down the aisle to the bouquet toss, you will be surrounded by guests and admirers from all sides. If you have short hair or are planning an elegant updo for your long hair, your back will be extremely prominent. Therefore, it is important to dedicate some thought to the back detail you want for your wedding gown.

If you do not wish for your back to be a primary focus, you may prefer more understated details such as buttons, a zipper, or corset style. If you have a long torso and a slender back, on the other hand, feel free to show it off by opting for an open back, low back, or keyhole design.

Step 4: Choose Your Fabric

Fabric is the other key defining feature of a wedding dress. The fabric you select will play an important role in setting the tone for the overall event, so this decision is best made by stepping back and considering the bigger picture. Tulle, taffeta, satin, organza, chiffon, and lace are some of the most popular, well-known fabrics for wedding gowns, but they are also available in crepe, Dupioni, net, and Georgette fabrics.

In general, light and airy fabrics such as chiffon and tulle are better suited for casual or rustic weddings, whereas heavy fabrics such as satin are better reserved for formal affairs. Some fabrics, such as lace, create timeless wedding looks that are perfectly suited for any occasion.
