7 Tips for the Mother of the Bride

Wedding planning isn't just a big deal for the bride and groom, it's also a special time for their mothers. In honor of Mother's Day this weekend, we wanted to focus today's blog on the Mothers of the Brides. Here we share with you some helpful tips for mothers as they go through the wedding process with their daughter. Being the mother of the bride is not any easy task.

1. Don't Be Momzilla.

While you want to do your part in contributing the the wedding planning process, make sure you don't turn into "Momzilla." When it comes to your daughter's wedding, you have to remember it's their special day. While you can offer up suggestions, just remember things are ultimately up to the bride and groom to decide. Pick your battles, and present them as a request not a demand. Let your daughter know that you're there to help, not control, when it comes to the wedding plans.

2. Be the Point Person for Family.

As the mother of the bride, one of the best things you can do to help out the bride and groom is to be the designated point person. During the wedding planning process, the bride and groom have enough to worry about without being bombarded with questions from family. Take the lead and answer everyone's questions so that the bride and groom don't have to. This also expands to being the peacekeeper between family members that may not get along very well.

3. Make Friends with the Groom's Parents.

A wedding is a joining of two different families. There will be tons of photos and conversations to be had on the big day. Before diving too deep into the wedding planning process, get to know the groom's parents a little better by making friends with them. Invite them over for a nice dinner or happy hour. Together you can discuss how involved everyone wants to be in the wedding, and get off on the right foot before the wedding planning stress kicks in.

4. Be Open and Honest About Budgeting.

During the wedding planning process, it's easy to get carried away with all these grand ideas the bride's had since childhood. Unfortunately, those plans can get expensive. It's important that you have an honest discussion about budgeting with the bride and groom before the planning gets too far underway, especially if you're helping foot the bill. Be sure to let them know how much you're willing to contribute. Make sure the groom does the same with his parents and a budget is set before any vendors are hired.

5. Say Yes to Her Dress.

Wedding dress shopping in Florida is one of the most fun aspects of the wedding planning process. While you may have a vision for how your daughter will look on her wedding day, remember that it's her day. You can offer up your opinion about which dress you think is the best, but be prepared to bite your tongue if she doesn't agree. Remember, she's your daughter, and she'll be beautiful on her wedding day no matter what style of dress she chooses to wear on the big day!

6. Dress Appropriately for the Occasion.

As the mother of the bride, there are some rules of thumb you'll want to follow when choosing your dress. First, you'll want to wait to see what the bridesmaids will be wearing before you choose your look. You want to make sure that the dress you choose matches with the overall theme and style of the wedding. Communicate with the bride your ideas for your look. While you don't need to match per say, it might be nice to have a similar style of dress to the groom's mother. Be sure not to turn this into a contest of who can look better on the big day.

7. Remember, It Isn't About You, But It Is.

Prepare yourself for the big day! While everyone is convinced this day is about your daughter and what she wants, that's only true to an extent. In all reality, it's about you too. You're giving your daughter away. This can be an emotional time for everyone, so it's a good idea to mentally prepare yourself for this special moment that you'll all cherish forever.
