Wedding Gowns Throughout History - Part 2

Bridal Couture of the Palm Beaches is back with a Part Two of our travel back in time. Last week, we rediscovered the bridal fashions of years past and found trends that have carried on through today. Your favorite Florida bridal salon is always on top of the latest trends, but today we’re taking it back to revisit the fifties fashion and beyond.

1950s

American actresses Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly set the tone for wedding gowns in this decade. Sweetheart necklines made their debut, and ballerina-length dresses became more and more popular. Full, tiered skirts and fitted, cinched bodices gave an illusion to the women’s bodies. This was the first time that strapless gowns made their appearance, although coordinating bolero jackets were often worn for the actual ceremony.

1960s

The 1910s empire waistline resurged in the ‘60s. Pillbox hats were also worn with short, voluminous veils spilling over. Necklines remained high and modest, often incorporating a cap sleeve. To reflect the Space Age, metallic embellishments were often used throughout the wedding decor, such as details on the dress. Despite the metallic accents, the daisy was also incredibly popular. Brides would often incorporate daisies throughout their décor and dress as well.

1970s

It’s hard to pinpoint a particular style that was happening in the ‘70s. The more obvious style born from this decade is the Bohemian vibe with square necklines and more empire waistlines. Brides often chose long, batwing sleeves that cascaded down the arms. Besides the boho feel, brides were also donning princess gowns and punk pantsuits. Bridal fashion in the 1970s was very personalized, giving each gown an individualistic feel. It was also in the 1970s that bridal became a business. Designers began producing off-the-rack dresses that were featured in new bridal magazines.

1980s

Tradition and formality came back in full force with the ‘80s, as brides began to again embrace the cathedral trains and full-length veils. During this decade, bigger was better. Teased hair, oversized shoulders, and high collars were all the rage. Princess Diana led this trend with her iconic wedding gown, proving that dramatic fantasy weddings were in.

1990s

Neat, chic, minimalism was the trend for this decade. The simpler, the better! Gowns were often fitted and figure-flattering. Slim, sheath dresses made their debut, as weddings were becoming more and more popular within pop culture and the film industry. Many women took their inspiration from popular movies at the time such as Father of the Bride (1991) and My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997). Brides tended to stray from the embellishments, so gowns lacked excessive lace or beading.

2000s

It was significantly less common for weddings during this era to be held in places of worship, so many brides opted for a strapless option. Outdoor and destination weddings became increasingly more popular, allowing women to opt for warmer options in terms of dresses and accessories. Gloves were no longer worn, and veils weren’t the norm. Dress detailing came back into style, but not with the force of the ‘80s. Lace and beading made appearances along the waist or skirt of the dress.

2010s

Details are on trend in the current decade. Texture, crystals, intricate beading, and lace are popular embellishments on the modern bride’s gown. Form-fitting dresses are hot right now too, and women are preferring a mermaid silhouette over other more traditional gowns. Kate Middleton popularized the veil once more when she donned a long, lacy veil at her wedding to Prince William in 2011. Asymmetric styles entice the brides of today, and many modern brides have multiple gowns for their big day.

It’s always interesting to look back and see how far we’ve come, especially in terms of bridalwear.
