Misconceptions About Bridesmaid Dresses

There is a lot that goes into planning a wedding - securing a venue, picking your date, finding your dream wedding dress, choosing your decorations, and much more! Of course, choosing the attire for your bridal party is a big part of planning a wedding because it sets the tone for your wedding decore and theme. Bridesmaid shopping specifically is a lot of fun but sometimes the experience can be overcomplicated by misconceptions associated with bridesmaid dresses. Read on to learn more about 5 misconceptions about choosing your bridesmaid dresses in South Florida.

Myth #1: They Have To Be The Same Style

Traditionally, all of the bridesmaids wore identical dresses. This ritual dates back to ancient times when it was believed that brides were often targeted by evil spirits - the bride wore a veil to shield herself, and the bridesmaids dressed in identical dresses to distract the spirits (essentially by serving as decoys). Since you probably don't subscribe to this same belief system, there's no reason your bridal party should be required to wear the same dress.

In fact, allowing your bridesmaids to wear different styles of dresses may be the best way to ensure that each woman looks and feels her best. Whereas one style of dress may be extremely flattering on your curvy friend, it may be less than ideal for your rail-thin sister. Don't be afraid to shake up the theme!

Myth #2: They Have To Be The Same Color

As we mentioned, traditional bridesmaid dresses used to be identical - in both style AND color. However, modern brides are bucking this tradition and instead going with dresses in varying hues, tones, or colors. The sky is truly the limit when it comes to how you can mix and match your girls' dresses colors:
  • Alternate solid and patterned dresses
  • Give each bridesmaid a dress in a different shade of your primary wedding color (blue, green, etc)
  • Pick your primary wedding colors and have each bridesmaid wear one of the colors
Don't be afraid to think outside of the box!

Myth #3: Your Girls Should Pick What They Want To Wear

Giving your bridesmaids free reign to choose their own attire for your wedding day may sound like a great way to minimize your to-do list, but be careful how much freedom you give them. If you have a large bridal party, your bridesmaids may find it difficult to come to an agreement on their own. Similarly, if you ask for input from each of your bridesmaids, you may find that it is impossible to please everyone.

Myth #4: You Should Do It All By Yourself

While it's true that giving your bridesmaids too much freedom to pick their own dresses can be a recipe for disaster, assuming all of the responsibility yourself will most likely leave you feeling overworked and overwhelmed. We recommend that you strike a manageable balance - pick two or three dress styles you like and ask your girls for input on their favorites. If you've decided to mix and match the dresses, you can choose a single style and let each girl pick her own color (or vice versa).

Myth #5: It Can Wait

Most people are aware that it's important to start shopping for your dress several months (or even a year) in advance, but fewer people realize that it's important to allow ample time for bridesmaid dress shopping as well. Bridesmaid dresses need time to be ordered, shipped, and altered. Don't be surprised if it takes up for three months to your bridesmaid dresses to arrive after they have been ordered.
